We posted this recipe on our Instagram grid at the beginning of lockdown. With the onset of Autumn and the necessary use of hand sanitiser and soap on our hands, we thought we would share it again for inspiration on how to care for your hands during the harsh winter months.
An easy and nourishing hand scrub recipe to revitalise your heavily washed hands using just 3 storecupboard ingredients: sea salt, coconut oil and olive oil in a ratio of 6:3:1 plus optional essential oils.
Makes 100ml
8 tbps sea salt
4 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp olive oil
10 drops of essential oils (optional)
- Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
- Add your favourite essential oils and give another stir, it’s as simple as that!
Sea salt is a mineral which helps to nourish the skin. Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory and healing, helping to moisturise and nourish dry skin. Olive oil contains essential fatty acids and antioxidants to condition and help prevent water loss in your skin (transepidermal water loss) and both oils also help to remove dirt. This a perfect hand scrub to your revitalise dry hands from the constant handwashing which is so important at this time.
Try adding lavender essential oil to your scrub. It contains the compound linalool, which helps boost immunity by helping the efficiency of white blood cells. It is also softening, conditioning and healing for the skin, and relaxing for your mind, making this a perfect essential oil right now! You could also try eucalyptus and sage, which help boost immunity, or soothing chamomile, calming rose or balancing geranium. Use lemon for an antiseptic and uplifting scent, or Melissa for its healing properties.
